Hiding the toys!

Here's how to decorate around toys and "blend" in with your decor.

When you had your first baby, did you pick out the pack and play to match the stroller to match the swing material? So did I! It's true, the green in the pack and play did match my living room color scheme :) But not for long!

Then came along the toys. The doll strollers, the excersaucer, the doll house...

We never seem to stop accumulating toys. Here's what you can do to organize the toys, designate a home for them, and then do your best to disguise them if they are in your main living space.

1. Assess whether ALL of the toys really need to be in the living room. Could they be in your children's bedroom closets? In a playroom? Underneath a stairwell?

2. Certain toy items and activities make sense to house in the living room, such as a music center. Set up a CD player and house the CDs or tapes in a beautiful armoire or an old chest. The music does not have to be in a vinyl CD case. If that way works best for you, blend the CD storage on a shelf with a few plants around it or on a bakers rack.

3. Doll strollers can rest in the spaces behind couches or in the corners of a wall.

4. Doll houses (not the bright plastic pink ones) can actually be part of your living room decor- for instance, a large one can rest on the floor in front of your fireplace.

5. Board games and toys with lots of little pieces can go in baskets on bookshelves or disguised in an armoire.

6. Dress up clothes can go inside trunks or attractive boxes or even in a stack of small antique suitcases that are not being used. The kids can take them out and put them back when it is time to cleanup.

7. Floor pillows are great "chairs" for little ones and are fun to make tents with. Good looking floor pillows can be found at any home decorating store and are movable which is essential for organizing toys.
Basically, the rule of thumb with organizing toys is to stay on top of the influx of toys, keep toys in the childrens' rooms and not just the living room, and to buy attractive boxes and bins with lids to store the toys in so they all do not have to stick out like a sore thumb.
